Many things are worth remembering about your baby turning one, and the perfectly clean outfit before the cake comes out is only the beginning. For Noah’s milestone photos, we spent a sunny evening at Columbia Park celebrating the little person he became over the past year—with Mom, Dad, their two dogs, a tiny party hat, and eventually a very smashable birthday cake.

This session came to me through my hairstylist, whose husband is cousins with Noah’s dad. One of my favorite things about living and working in the Tri-Cities is the referral community here. Somehow, everyone is connected by a friend, cousin, coworker, or hairstylist, and I genuinely love it. We already have a little familiarity before we ever meet, which makes showing up for photos feel a whole lot less like meeting a stranger with a camera. And for a first birthday, I want it to feel easy. We are celebrating a one-year-old, after all.

Milestone Photos at Columbia Park

Columbia Park is one of those places I return to again and again because it really doesn't need much help. The huge willow trees, open grassy areas, and evening light give us plenty of variety while still keeping everything simple and natural. Noah’s family chose warm neutrals and soft rust tones, which looked so beautiful against all that green.

We started with the whole crew, including the dogs. I will always have a soft spot for clients who ask if their pets can come to their session. The answer is very often an enthusiastic yes, especially when those pets were the first babies. They were there before the newborn snuggles, bottles, sleepless nights, and first steps, and now they are part of a family that looks entirely different than it did a couple of years ago. So naturally, Noah needed a photo with his furry siblings.

I also loved that his parents wanted to be in the session. Noah was absolutely the star, but his first birthday marked one full year of this version of their family, too. One year of learning him, watching each other become parents, figuring out routines, and celebrating a whole lot of firsts.

We captured the classic everyone-looking-at-the-camera portraits, but also Mom tossing Noah into the air, cuddles on the blanket, and the three of them simply being together. I want you to have the frame-worthy family photo, but I also want the images that remind you exactly how it felt to be their favorite person at this age.

A First Birthday, a Tiny Party Hat + a Little Cake

Once we had plenty of updated family photos, it was time to let Noah have his moment. We kept his birthday setup simple: a blanket beneath the trees, a blue number-one balloon, the sweetest little party hat, and eventually, cake.

This age is so much fun to photograph because babies have become very much their own people. They clap, giggle, stare suspiciously at the cake you just placed in front of them. They make faces that could never be recreated on command. And when they decide they are done with something, everyone will know.

We let Noah explore the cake at his own pace, frosting-covered fingers and all. What I ultimately want from milestone photos is not perfection, but the tiny expressions, family dynamics, laughs, messy cake, and details that feel completely normal today but will look so different a year from now.

If you’re looking for milestone photos in the Tri-Cities or Walla Walla, your session can be this simple: a beautiful location, the people (and four-legged family members) you love most, and plenty of room for your baby to be exactly who they are. Turning one is a pretty big deal. And making it through that first year as a family deserves to be documented, too.
