Your body is busy creating a whole new human, your heart is overflowing with anticipation, and you’re glowing in ways you may not even notice until you see it captured on camera. That’s where maternity photoshoot tips come in: to help you prepare, feel confident, and fully embrace this once-in-a-lifetime moment. My goal is always to make the process feel light, fun, and effortless.
Where does it all begin? With the very first step: reaching out. Submitting that inquiry form might seem like a tiny detail, but it’s the start of everything. Pregnancy runs on its own timeline (and let’s be honest, babies love a surprise entrance), so booking early gives you peace of mind and room to play with ideas. The sweet spot is inquiring around 22–25 weeks, which ensures you snag a date that fits your schedule before calendars get too packed, while also giving us plenty of time to design a dreamy session.
When it comes to the session itself, the magic window is between 30 and 35 weeks. By this stage, your bump has blossomed, you’re radiant in the fullness of motherhood, and you still have the comfort and energy to enjoy the experience.
Planning Your Dream Maternity Photoshoot
Once your date is on the calendar, the fun really begins—this is where imagination takes the lead and your personality starts weaving its way into the vision. I always encourage mamas-to-be to dive headfirst into the creative process, whether that looks like building a Pinterest board, daydreaming about colors and textures, or simply jotting down the feelings you want your photos to capture. Do you picture soft and romantic, vintage, or bold and playful?
Props can play a beautiful role in making your session feel personal and unique. Think florals, a cozy blanket, or ultrasound photos and tiny baby clothes. Sentimental items are the ones that make your gallery feel truly yours.
Location has a magical way of shaping the mood of your entire session. You could be glowing in golden sunlight across an open field, snuggled on the couch in the comfort of your own home, or surrounded by the simplicity of a studio space. Each choice creates a different atmosphere: natural, intimate, or editorial. Together, we’ll find the perfect setting that feels aligned with your story and vision.
Above all, planning your dream session is about collaboration. You don’t have to have every single detail figured out—that’s what I’m here for. We’ll dream, brainstorm, and fine-tune together until we’ve crafted an experience that feels intentional. In the end, the best sessions are the ones where your personality shines through, where you feel comfortable, beautiful, and completely yourself.
Outfits That Flatter
Let’s talk about one of my favorite parts of maternity sessions—what to wear! While the timeless, form-fitting maternity dress will always have its place (and yes, it photographs beautifully), there’s a whole world of style waiting for you beyond that classic look. This is your chance to play, express yourself, and show off your bump.
Flowy skirts paired with a denim or linen vest for a western-inspired twist, a silky dress that drapes just right, or even casual-chic jeans with a crop top or bralette are all fun ways to dress your bump. If boho vibes are calling your name, a loose, textured dress or neutral-toned layers can create an effortless aesthetic. Pinterest is your best friend here—let yourself be inspired, but don’t be afraid to make it your own.
One of my best little tips is definitely to bring an extra outfit. A simple switch can completely transform the mood of your gallery—soft and romantic in one look, bold and playful in the next. It also gives us the flexibility to adapt to the location and lighting. Outfit changes can ensure your final gallery has depth and variety.
What to Expect During Your Maternity Photoshoot
Take a deep breath—you don’t need to know a single pose or practice in the mirror beforehand. That’s my job, and I promise to guide you through every step so it feels natural, effortless, and even a little bit fun. Think of the session less like a photoshoot and more like spending an hour together daydreaming about your little one and soaking up this fleeting season of life.
The magic happens when you relax into the experience. That’s when the candid emotions surface. My role is to notice those details and to capture them quietly while you enjoy being present.
And don’t be surprised if you hear me gush more times than you can count—“oh my gosh, CUTE!” or “okay, okay, one more pose!”—because honestly, it’s impossible not to when the energy is just that good. That’s the heart of maternity photography: a blend of playful encouragement, gentle direction, and genuine awe at the beauty unfolding right in front of the lens.
By the end, you’ll walk away not only with a gallery of glowing, Pinterest-worthy images, but also with memories of a joyful, stress-free experience that reminds you just how magical this chapter truly is. See these desert maternity photos at Twin Sisters Rock!
Tri-Cities Newborn & Maternity Photographer
Maternity sessions are about preserving the beauty of this season. Every mama deserves to see herself in this light: radiant, strong, and wrapped in the wonder of motherhood.
Of course, we’ll style and plan to achieve those dreamy images, but the magic lies within the authentic emotions. The balance of intentional styling and raw moments is what transforms your gallery into something elevated, timeless, and completely your own.
When you walk away from your session, my hope is that you don’t just see photos—you feel them. That you’re reminded of the excitement, love, and quiet wonder that filled these days of waiting. A maternity session is a gift to yourself, your family, and the little one you’ll one day share these images with. A chapter preserved so you can revisit the magic again and again.
